Step 2: Label the Scenes
In the "SCENE:" column, provide a brief, descriptive label for each scene in your documentary. Scenes are distinct segments or chapters that focus on a specific topic, location, or narrative point. If a scene spans multiple shots or panels, repeat the scene label for each corresponding row.
Step 3: Number the Shots
In the "SHOT:" column, assign a sequential number to each shot within a scene (1, 2, 3…). Shots are the individual camera angles, frames, or visual elements that make up a scene. Numbering the shots helps maintain a logical order and flow throughout your storyboard.
Step 4: Specify the Location
In the "LOCATION:" field, indicate where each shot or scene takes place. This could be a specific setting, venue, or geographical location relevant to your documentary subject. Providing location details helps with planning and logistics during the production process.
Step 5: Describe the Action/Camera
Under the "ACTION/CAMERA:" heading, briefly describe the main action, event, or visual content of each shot. This could include any notable camera movements, angles, or framing that are crucial to capturing the scene effectively. Keep the descriptions concise yet informative.
Step 6: Include Narrator/Sound Details
In the "NARRATOR/SOUND:" section, specify any voiceover narration, interviews, or important audio elements that accompany each shot or scene. If your documentary includes a narrator, indicate the key points or script excerpts to be spoken. Also, make note of any ambient sounds, music, or sound effects that enhance the storytelling.
Step 7: Add Notes
Use the "NOTES:" field to include any additional comments, reminders, or creative ideas related to each shot or scene. This space is perfect for noting any special requirements, technical considerations, or specific details that are important to capture during filming or post-production.
Step 8: Review and Refine
Once you have completed the storyboard template for your documentary, review the entire document from start to finish. Ensure that the scenes flow logically, the visuals align with the narrative, and the overall structure effectively conveys your intended message. Make any necessary revisions or adjustments to enhance the clarity, impact, and cohesiveness of your documentary storyboard.
