MCP server

Use Boords from Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps over MCP

Connect Boords to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app so you can create and update your projects, scripts, storyboards and frames by asking in plain English.

Connections are in beta and free to use on all paid plans. Usage limits may apply in future.

How Connections work

Boords runs an MCP server. MCP is an open standard that lets an AI app use the tools inside another product. Once you connect, you can ask things like "Turn this script into a storyboard" or "Summarise the unresolved comments on the launch film storyboard", and your AI app does the work in Boords for you.

A connection uses your own Boords account. Your AI app can see and change exactly what you can, across every team you belong to, including teams you join later. If you're a guest on a project, your AI app is a guest too.

You set up Connections in Settings → Team → Connections.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A paid Boords plan. Free accounts can see the Connections page but need to upgrade to connect.
  • An AI app that supports remote MCP servers. Boords has guided setup for Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code. Other tools, such as Cursor, work with the server URL.

You don't need an API key. You sign in to Boords from your AI app and approve access once.

Connect Claude

This works on claude.ai and in the Claude desktop app.

  1. Go to Settings → Team → Connections and pick Claude
  2. Click Add to Claude. Claude opens with Boords ready to add as a connector
  3. Click Connect in Claude, sign in to Boords, then approve access

Boords now works in every Claude chat.

Connect ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects custom MCP servers through Developer mode, which is available on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans.

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login and switch on Developer mode

  2. Open Plugins, click the plus button and name the plugin Boords

  3. Choose OAuth and paste this as the MCP server URL:

    https://app.boords.com/mcp

  4. Click Create. ChatGPT sends you to Boords to sign in and approve access

Boords now appears under Developer mode in the ChatGPT composer. Turn it on in a chat and ask away.

Connect Claude Code

  1. Open a terminal and run:

claude mcp add boords --scope user --transport http https://app.boords.com/mcp

  2. Start Claude Code and type /mcp

  3. Choose boords, then Authenticate. A browser tab opens for you to sign in to Boords and approve access

Boords now works in every Claude Code session.

Connect another app

Any tool that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in will work. Give it this server URL and choose OAuth if it asks how to sign in:

https://app.boords.com/mcp

When the tool asks you to sign in, use your Boords account and approve access.

Approving access

When you connect, Boords shows an approval screen with the account you're signed in as and what the app is asking for:

  • Read: view projects, scripts, storyboards, frames, assets, comments and teams you can access
  • Read and write: create and update projects, scripts, storyboards, frames, images, frame order and comments

If an app hasn't been verified by Boords, you'll see a warning and need to confirm you started the connection yourself. Only continue if you did.

A connection stays active until you disconnect it, or until it goes unused for 90 days.

What your AI app can do

With a connection, your AI app can work with:

  • Projects: list, create and update projects
  • Scripts: create, edit, duplicate, archive and restore scripts, and save versions
  • Storyboards: create storyboards, including frames from a script, and update their details. Your AI app gets a link to open each storyboard in Boords
  • Frames: add, update, delete and reorder frames, and attach images, including images made in another tool
  • Asset Library: add, rename, file and delete images and folders in the Asset Library
  • Comments: read, add, update and delete comments, and @mention teammates
  • Notifications and activity: read and mark your notifications, and read your team's activity feed if your plan includes the Activity Log

Anything destructive, such as deleting a frame or a folder, needs an explicit confirmation before it runs.

What's not available yet

Boords' own image generation, restyling, styles and webhook settings aren't available through a connection. Use the app for those, or the Boords API and webhooks for automation.

Managing connections

Every app you've connected is listed under Connected tools in Settings → Team → Connections, with its access level, when you connected it and when it was last used.

Click Disconnect to remove an app. It loses access to Boords immediately. To use it again, connect it from scratch.

Connections belong to you, not your team. Each teammate connects their own account, and you only see your own connections.

Troubleshooting

The connect buttons are greyed out

Connections need a paid plan. If you're on a free plan, you'll see an upgrade prompt on the Connections page.

My AI app can't find a project

Your AI app can only see what you can see in Boords. Check that you're a member of the team and project, and that you signed in with the right Boords account when you connected.

My AI app can't make changes

Check two things. First, your role: if you can't edit something in Boords, your AI app can't either (see Team users and roles). Second, the access you approved: a Read connection can't make changes. Disconnect the app and connect again to approve read and write access.

I'm being asked to sign in again

Your connection may have been disconnected, or gone unused for 90 days. Sign in and approve access again from your AI app.
